If you're a legal professional in the UK, you may be curious about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly tools like ChatGPT. In this article, we explore legal technology and how these advancements are impacting legal professionals in the UK.

A growing presence in the legal industry

The use of AI technology is becoming increasingly prevalent across various industries. By handling tasks traditionally performed by humans, AI tools offer greater consistency and quality at a reduced cost. Recent studies indicate that AI can match or even surpass human performance in numerous tasks including clerical and routine work.

Sometimes referred to as ‘robot lawyers’, AI tools are beginning to make their way into law firms worldwide. For instance, they can assist in drafting legal documents, reviewing contracts, and identifying relevant materials during the discovery process. They can even provide legal guidance and speed up legal proceedings.

Types of AI tools

• ChatGPT, a variant of the GPT-3 language model developed by OpenAI is an AI chatbot designed to address open-ended questions and provide coherent responses quickly. Legal professionals, from trainees to senior solicitors, utilise it to obtain quick answers, saving time they would otherwise spend on research.

Archie is an AI matter assistant that can securely comb through matter data and documents to deliver lightning-fast summaries. It provides quick access to relevant information and generating summaries to speed up case preparation. By automating routine tasks such as data retrieval and analysis, Archie allows solicitors to focus on delivering exceptional legal services and improving client outcomes.

Luminance is an AI-powered legal technology platform designed primarily for document review and analysis. It uses machine learning algorithms to read and understand legal documents, helping law firms and legal teams to streamline their due diligence process.

How AI is used in the legal sector

• Facilitating the discovery process: Many solicitors use machine learning tools for tasks such as reviewing contracts, drafting documents, and identifying errors that might go unnoticed by human scrutiny. AI significantly eases the discovery process by organising documents related to a particular case. Additionally, AI tools like Archie are increasingly valuable for legal research, saving time by highlighting insights and authorities.

• Automated legal scholars: AI can process extensive datasets that yield new insights that enhance legal strategies, such as predicting case outcomes based on historical data relevant to UK courts. For example, AI algorithms can assist firms in identifying emerging legal trends, such as those related to Brexit or recent regulatory changes and compare the strengths of different legal arguments to better prepare for hearings before UK judges.

Can ChatGPT be used for legal practice management?

Although ChatGPT offers valuable insights and can automate certain tasks, it is not a substitute for legal practice management software and doesn’t include case management, time tracking, billing and document management. While ChatGPT can manage basic legal queries, it cannot interpret nuanced cases or provide comprehensive legal advice. When used, it should be alongside a dedicated practice management software and the expertise of legal professionals to optimise overall practice management and client service.

The impact of AI on solicitors

The complexity of law often requires human intuition and experience, which AI cannot yet replicate. Additionally, ethical questions emerge when AI is involved in legal decision-making. Although AI tools can assist with compliance and ethics, they cannot offer the nuanced guidance required in these areas. There are also concerns about bias, as AI systems may reflect the biases present in the data they process.

Furthermore, practical issues such as data privacy and security also come into play. AI-generated content may have different implications for data protection compared to human-generated content.

So, while AI provides significant benefits, such as enhancing efficiency and supporting legal tasks, it cannot fully replace the expertise and judgement of human professionals. Solicitors and judges will continue to play pivotal roles in delivering legal services.
